SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt admitted his side’s defending was below par in their 4-1 Carling Knockout Cup defeat to Polokwane City.
Oswin Appollis (21′), Rodney Maphangule (45+3′) and Hlayisi Chauke (64′, 75′) were all on target in the first round tie at the TUT Stadium on Sunday while Terrence Dzvukamanja (88′) netted a late consolation goal for Hunt’s team.
Matsatsantsa are only two points better off than Rise and Shine in the DStv Premiership, meaning this was always going to be an interesting cup clash, but conceding four goals to the newly-promoted side was a shock.

Reflecting on the result, Hunt said in the Citizen: “We had a lot of chances but every time they broke out they scored. So we didn’t defend well enough. We have to defend better and we didn’t.
“We’re not blessed with a lot of players when we lose one or two, but we can’t make excuses like that. If they (players) are under contract, they should be better and they weren’t. We were out-muscled and that’s not good enough for me.”
Hunt added: “Collectively, we weren’t good enough and there are lot of things that we need to get right.”
