Despite being on loan to AmaKhosi, Gonzalez is steadily earning his stripes, and Johnson is inclined to grant him more playing time in the closing weeks of the year.

Gonzalez showcased his skills during Chiefs’ hard-fought 1-0 victory over Moroka Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday. Although it was only his seventh appearance this season and his second under Johnson, the promising striker demonstrated resilience and potential in the half-hour he spent on the pitch.

While Gonzalez is yet to hit the back of the net since joining the Soweto giants, Johnson remains optimistic, emphasizing the importance of time and understanding in unlocking the striker’s latent value.

In a post-match reflection on Gonzalez’s performance, Johnson drew parallels with his previous experience coaching Colombian talent, citing Luis Renteria at Platinum Stars. He acknowledged the inherent stubbornness of Colombians but also highlighted their love for the game. Johnson is determined to unravel the enigma of Gonzalez, a strategy that proved successful with Renteria.

“South Americans don’t worry about how big the brand is, as long as they are able to play in front of people,” Johnson observed. He believes that as Gonzalez becomes more familiar with the Kaizer Chiefs ethos, his performance will soar. According to Johnson, the striker possesses noteworthy footwork and physical prowess, factors that, when coupled with a deeper understanding of African football, are poised to elevate Gonzalez’s contributions on the field.

Addressing the upcoming challenges, Johnson expressed his anticipation for Gonzalez’s growth throughout the season. “He’s got very good feet and he has a good body on him. He is physically getting better all the time, so I am expecting him to give us something better as the season goes on.”

As Kaizer Chiefs gears up for their next DStv Premiership clash against Polokwane City at Peter Mokaba Stadium on December 9, all eyes will be on Jasond Gonzalez, waiting to witness the evolution of this diamond in the rough into a star for the Soweto giants.
