Sekhukhune United advanced to the next round of the Nedbank Cup in dramatic fashion after a 1-1 (5-4) penalty shootout win over Highlands Park at Dobsonville Stadium on Wednesday. While the University of Pretoria upset Cape Town Spurs 1-0 at the Tuks Stadium.

With the teams failing to break the deadlock during the regulation 90 minutes, Sekhukhune grabbed what looked like the decisive goal through defender Tresor Yamba four minutes into extra-time.

With literally the last kick of the game though, Highlands Park incredibly levelled matters thanks to Emilio Da Costa Abreu two minutes past 120 minutes of football.

With the game heading to a penalty shootout, it was left-back Refentse Mphele who heartbreakingly missed the last penalty of the shootout to crash out of the competition.

Meanwhile at Tuks Stadium Delano Abrahams scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute in a 1-0 win to send Ernst Middendorp’s Urban Warriors crashing out of the cup competition.

Languishing rock bottom of the DStv Premiership standings, Spurs now only have avoiding automatic as their objective for the remainder of the season.
