Ordinarily, scoring four unanswered goals in the Caf Champions League qualifiers would satisfy most coaches, but four goals were seemingly not enough to please Manqoba Mngqithi.

Ordinarily, scoring four unanswered goals in the Caf Champions League qualifiers would satisfy most coaches, but four goals were seemingly not enough to please Manqoba Mngqithi.

The seasoned coach looked on as his Mamelodi Sundowns made light of Eswatini giants Mbabane Swallows in the first-leg of the Champions League preliminary round, beating them 4-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium this past weekend.

Goals came from defender Mosa Lebusa, Iqraam Rayners and a brace by Lucas Ribeiro, but their coach wanted to see the ball rattle the back of the net a few more times.

“We could have scored seven or eight goals had we taken our chances because we did get some very good chances and we nullified the possibility of conceding from the opponents.

“I still believe that the chances that we got were too many for us to score as many goals as possible. You will forgive me for being unhappy for not having scored as many goals that I thought we deserved,” said Mngqithi.

In the four competitive games Sundowns have played this season, this match was the first time that they managed to score after winning the MTN8 quarter-final against Polokwane City 1-0, thanks to a Tholo Matuludi own goal.

Downs went on a barren run of two games against Stellenbosch in the semi-final – an outcome that saw some criticism leveled at Mngqithi, which he has since addressed.

However, looking back at the start of the season, Mnqgithi is concerned about the low conversion rate.

“We need to improve in this aspect of scoring because in the Champions League we sometimes don’t get many chances.

“It was the same story when we played Polokwane because I felt we should have scored four or five goals in the first 30 minutes of the game but when it comes out at the end of the game and you win with an own goal and everybody starts to talk about not scoring a goal and winning with an own goal, it looks like you did not perform well.
