While they secured the MTN8, their journey in the CAF Champions League and Carling Knockout Cup competitions was cut short. Head coach Jose Riveiro has faced additional hurdles with a significant number of players sidelined due to injuries.

The club’s official website recently released a comprehensive medical update shedding light on the status of nine injured players. Two among them, Azola Matrose and Paseko Mako, are set to be on the sidelines until 2024, dealing a blow to Pirates’ ambitions.

Matrose, a promising 20-year-old winger, signed from Chippa United, has been grappling with a fracture sustained during a loan spell. Despite undergoing surgery, he is expected to resume full training only in the new year. Joining him in the extended absence is defender Paseko Mako, who suffered a PCL tear while on national team duty. Following successful surgery and a month of recovery, Mako faces a six-month hiatus from the pitch.

However, amidst the challenges, there is a glimmer of hope for Pirates. Club captain Innocent Maela, recovering from a groin injury, is slated to return to training in December, providing a boost to the team.

The attacking trio of Kermit Erasmus, Kabelo Dlamini and Lesedi Kapinga brings further positivity. All three players have commenced training after overcoming their respective injuries, signalling a potential resurgence in Pirates’ attacking prowess.

The detailed medical report by the club delves into each player’s journey towards recovery. Azola Matrose’s fibula injury, Innocent Maela’s adductor issue, Kabelo Dlamini’s ankle concerns, and the various setbacks faced by others are outlined with precision.

Among the notable recoveries is goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, who suffered a knee injury during the Carling Black Label Knockout clash against Cape Town Spurs. Four weeks into his recovery from a Grade 1 tear, Chaine is progressing steadily.

Midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula is on the verge of a full recovery from a hamstring strain, set to rejoin the squad after spending 18 days on the sidelines. Paseka Mako’s successful surgery following a knee injury and Lesedi Kapinga’s return to full training post a hamstring strain showcase the resilience of the Pirates’ squad.

Kermit Erasmus, instrumental in the 1-0 win over rivals Kaizer Chiefs, is expected to rejoin full training, adding another dimension to the attacking options for Orlando Pirates.

Defender Thabiso Monyane, recovering from a knee injury suffered in the Soweto Derby, is progressing through the acute phase of rehab and eyes a return to training in December.

As Pirates navigate the intricate path of rehabilitation, the return of key players injects hope into their campaign. With December promising the resurgence of crucial names, fans can anticipate a stronger and more formidable Orlando Pirates in the coming matches.
