Several publications reported that the former SuperSport United defender was involved in a hijacking incident on Wednesday evening.

Police later confirmed reports that Fleurs was killed by a single bullet to the upper body at a petrol station in Honeydew, Johannesburg.

Police Spokesperson Mavela Masonda told EWN that two suspects fled the scene with Fleurs’ vehicle.

“One suspect drove off with the victim’s car followed by his accomplice,” Masonda said.

“The victim was taken to the nearest medical care centre where he was certified dead on arrival. Police have opened a case of murder and car hijacking for investigation, and no arrests have been made yet.”

Kaizer Chiefs also released an official statement confirming the news that the 24-year-old had tragically lost his life.

“It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg,” the club said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

“The SAPS are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course.

“May his dear soul rest in peace.”

Fleurs hails from Mitchells Plain in Cape Town and is a product of the Ubuntu Academy in Fish Hoek before being recruited by SuperSport United in 2018.

The defender then signed for Chiefs in 2023 as a free agent in a shrewd signing by the Soweto giants with the player aiming to reignite his career.

Several DStv Premiership clubs such as Cape Town City and Golden Arrows shared their condolences.
