Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has revealed that they are interested in Khama Billiat but are waiting for the player to decide on his next step.

The Zimbabwean attacking midfielder has been without a club since deciding not to renew his contract with Kaizer Chiefs, after spending five trophyless seasons with the Soweto Giants, following his exit from Mamelodi Sundowns as a free agent.

Billiat had previously played for Ajax Cape Town alongside the likes of Thulani Serero, where he caught the eye of Masandawana before moving to the Tshwane giants.

John Comitis was one of the founders of Ajax Cape Town when Billiat arrived at the club prior to selling his shares in the club 14 years later and establishing Cape Town City.

“I have not had contact with Khama,” said Comitis to Metro FM.

“To be very honest, we were waiting on him to make a decision on his future, where he would like to see himself.

“I think he’s still in the efforts to try and find something in the Middle East, which would be rather lucrative for him. So we’re sitting aside and waiting for his response.”

The chairman also admitted that City’s assistant coach Lebogang Manyama, a former teammate of Billiat at both Ajax Cape Town and Kaizer Chiefs, had spoken to the 33-year-old about a potential move back to the Western Cape.

“Lebo Manyama had the conversation,” added Comitis. “That is the content of the conversation, yes. Who wouldn’t (want Billiat back)? As long as he is fit to play, who wouldn’t want Billiat in his team?”

The experienced Zimbabwean has been plagued with injuries over the past few seasons, having amassed 362 league matches in South Africa, scoring 95 goals and providing 96 assists in all competitions.

It remains to be seen if he decides to return to the Western Cape and if he would be fit enough to play without consistent injury concerns for the club.
