Sergio Ramos set a La Liga record after being sent off for the 19th time in his career in Real Madrid’s stalemate against Athletic Bilbao.

Ramos was dismissed in the latter stages of Saturday’s encounter for a second yellow card after catching Aritz Aduriz with his elbow.

It leaves the 31-year-old with the infamous tag of more sending-offs than any other player in Spanish football history, but more importantly, sees him join Casemiro and Dani Carvajal on the sidelines for next weekend’s visit of Sevilla.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane said: “Ramos is not happy because he thinks it was not worthy of a card, but that is how it is and we cannot change it now.”

The stalemate was Real’s third goalless draw of the campaign, and left the reigning champions down in fourth position – eight points adrift of league leaders Barcelona, who drew themselves with Celta Vigo.

“I am very happy with the performance and very disappointed not to score, but mostly I’m feeling disappointed for the players, as they gave everything,” added Zidane.

“We deserved more and in the end we did not get the goal that would have given us three points.

“My job is to make sure we are positive and playing so that the goals will come. I am not concerned, but I am disappointed for the players.”
