Pirates were battling in mid-table when Josef Zinnbauer took over the reins last year, but are currently on a seven-match unbeaten run, including four wins in five under the German tactician.

While the gap to Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs at the top of the table is 12 points after 18 matches, Sandilands believes they can overcome the deficit if they continue to focus on improving through the remainder of the season.

“Stranger things have happened in football, there’s always possibilities. For us, we’ve just got to make sure we’re doing what we can on our front and win our games,” the 36-year-old stopper told the media on Wednesday.

“We’ll see whatever happens, but judging on the current situation it looks like a big mountain to climb and teams on top are performing as well, not showing real signs of tapering off.

“But I think our focus has to be on our performances and trying to get the best we can out of our own individual and team performances, and take it from there.

“There’s no point in worrying about other teams when you’re not performing or picking the points, because then the situation won’t improve much.

“So, our attention is solely on what we can do, try and get the ship back sailing in the right direction.”

Pirates could close the gap even further when they host AmaZulu on Saturday evening.
