UEFA Nations League: Semifinal Preview

Semifinal Preview

The UEFA Nations League semi-finals take place in midweek with Portugal hosting Switzerland on Wednesday, while England take on the Netherlands on Thursday.

Wednesday 5 June

Portugal 13/20
Draw 11/4 |
Switzerland 17/4
Portugal are strong favourites to beat Switzerland on Wednesday night with the game being played at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto. Fernando Santos’ side secured top spot in Group 3 ahead of Italy and Poland, underlining their tag as favourites in this match – not to mention they boast two of Europe’s best attacking players in Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva.

But Switzerland showed they’re a quality side when they beat Belgium 5-2 in November, which saw them pip the Red Devils to claim top spot in Group 2. However, the Swiss have struggled on their travels, suffering three straight defeats away to Sweden, England and Belgium between July and October, 2018.

The last time Portugal and Switzerland met was in a World Cup qualifier in 2017, with the Selecao running out 2-0 winners in Lisbon. With the likes of Ronaldo and Bernardo along with home advantage, Portugal should come out on top.

Thursday 6 June

Netherlands 37/20
Draw 23/10
England 14/10
Netherlands and England do battle in a mouth-watering clash on Thursday night. After several years of decline, missing out on Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, this tournament has signalled the start of a strong recovery by the Netherlands. The Dutch claimed top spot in Group 1, finishing above world champions France and Germany.

Ronald Koeman has a squad bulging with talent, headlined by Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Ajax trio Matthijs de Ligt, Donny van de Beek and Frenkie de Jong (soon to be of Barcelona). Gareth Southgate also deserves massive credit for what he’s done with England. After overachieving at Russia 2018, guiding the Three Lions to fourth place, the 48-year-old led his side to top of Group 4, despite been pitted against Spain and 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia. This is a tough one to call, but I’m backing Netherlands to edge a hard-fought encounter at 37/20.

DOUBLE @ 37/10
Portugal Win 13/20
Netherlands Win 37/20
