SA-PSL-Catch-up-Games-Preview

Our football writer previews four 2016/17 PSL catch up matches, which get underway on Tuesday.

Orlando Pirates fans were the focal point of attention on Saturday afternoon after their humiliating and embarrassing 6-0 defeat at the hands on Mamelodi Sundowns. The match came to a standstill with 10 minutes of play remaining after the Bucs supporters invaded the pitch out of frustration, in a show of hooliganism. Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza has since come out and sincerely apologised for the terrible behaviour of their fans and said that they support the law in taking full action against those found guilty.

Enough on that subject, let’s get down to business. Tuesday and Wednesday will see a combined total of four catch-up matches take place. Teams will have the chance to make strides in their run-in for the title. Some will have the opportunity to give themselves a bit of breathing space and others will find this as the perfect opportunity to make some ground on the side’s above them. Yours truly will be looking to make some money off these enticing encounters, so find out below what’s worth backing.

Chippa United 4/1 | Draw 23/10 | Mamelodi Sundowns 13/20
Chippa United and Mamelodi Sundowns will square off on Valentine’s Day in what promises to be a loveless affair. The Chilli Boys have been decent at home with four wins from eight games, including three wins on the spin.

The Brazilians hammered Orlando Pirates 6-0 on Saturday afternoon, extending their winning run to four matches. They have won eight of their last nine games and will be eager to add to that. Sundowns are unbeaten in the last nine meetings in all competitions against Chippa and should be backed to grind out the win.

Wednesday 15 February

Baroka 5/4 | Draw 43/20 | Platinum Stars 19/10
Baroka currently find themselves at the foot of the table without a win in their last 10 matches. The new boys on the block are winless on their ground, scoring only seven goals and conceding double that amount.

Platinum Stars are unbeaten in their last four matches but drawing three on the trot. Baroka won the reverse tie 1-0, so Platinum will look to avenge that defeat. The away win is tipped.

Free State Stars 51/20 | Draw 22/10 | SuperSport 19/20
Free State Stars have lacked consistency in recent weeks. Ea Lla Koto are just two points clear of the relegation zone and have lost five of their last eight games. However, one positive going into this match is that they have won their last three home games.

SuperSport have been in top form and are unbeaten in their last 14 league games. But with two wins, five draws and one defeat from eight matches on the road, it doesn’t bode well for their chances. A tight game is expected and the sides are tipped to share the spoils.

Orlando Pirates 22/10 | Draw 22/10 Bidvest Wits 11/10
Pirates suffered their biggest ever league defeat last time out after Sundowns ran riot at Loftus Stadium, thrashing Bucs 6-0. They are now placed 10th on the standings and are winless in their last six matches with three defeats.

Wits come to town in red hot form after hammering Ajax Cape Town 5-0 on home soil last week. Unbeaten in their last four league games, the Clever Boys will be keen to maintain that form. Back Wits to nip the win at 11/10.
