PREVIEW: All to play for as Nedbank Cup action returns for Ro16 fixtures

Can Chiefs find a good enough run to put an end to their eight-year trophy drought? Do Pirates have what it takes to win a second trophy this season? Or can Sundowns defend the title having progressed to the quarter-finals?

Friday 10 March

Sekhukhune United 13/20 | Draw 5/2 | CT Spurs 15/4 (19:30)

Kicking off the action this Friday for the Nedbank Cup, Sekhukhune travel to challenge the ever-progressing Cape Town Spurs. Out of four fixtures against Western Cape based sides this season, Sekhukhune have won just one fixture, and recent form is not pleasant on the punter’s eye. Under South African legend, Shaun Bartlett, CT Spurs sit two points off the top of the NFD and currently ride a 10-match unbeaten run, conceding a mere six goals in just as many fixtures. Back the away side on the draw or win Double Chance.

Saturday 11 March

Golden Arrows 15/10 | Draw 2/1 | Royal AM 17/10 (15:00)

Golden Arrows look good on the ball this season against sides who struggle to minimize space, and striker Knox Mutizwa has been prolific in front of goal this season. However, without the ball, Arrows are completely shaky, and Royal AM know how to exploit that, having never lost to the KZN rivals. It will by no means by easy, but Royal AM are likely to walk away victorious.

Chippa United 1/6 | Draw 47/10 | Mpheni Home Defenders 14/1 (15:00)

The revolving door continues to spin profusely at Chippa United as Morgan Mammila’s recent “retirement” from coaching did not bring any good results under ‘again or newly’ appointed – I don’t know what to make of it – Kurt Lenjties. But surely, surely, Chippa can get a result against an exceedingly ambitious Mpheni Home Defenders.

Orlando Pirates 1/14 | Draw 7/1 | Venda 20/1 (20:00)

There is no value on the hosts, and it is not worth betting on, but if you just want to add a little more to your lengthy multiples, Orlando Pirates edging closer to a second trophy of the season is as sure as they come.

Sunday 12 March

TS Galaxy 14/10 | Draw 2/1 | Stellenbosch 18/10 (15:00)

Sunday afternoon sees the ever-present Sead Ramovic and TS Galaxy continue to desperately search for a winning formula to make the Rockets launch into something successful. But standing in their way is a youth structure that consistently churns out talent every year, Stellenbosch FC. This fixture is arguably the toughest of the round of 16 and with both teams’ form fluctuating throughout the season, the draw looks the likely outcome.

Kaizer Chiefs 1/3 | Draw 5/2 | Casric Stars 7/1 (18:00)

The last chance for Kaizer Chiefs to secure silverware this season comes in the form of the Nedbank Cup. Casric Stars comprehensively disposed of Mkhambathi 4-0 in the previous round and sit third in the NFD – although a recent run of four draws in five have hindered their progress. AmaKhosi have yet to win three games on the bounce this season, and back-to-back 1-0 victories over Orlando Pirates and Richards Bay respectively puts them in the unique position for only the second time this season. Some players look overworked under Arthur Zwane but can take solace in the fact that there aren’t many fixtures left this season. Back Chiefs to win.
