Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion born in Saginaw, Michigan is a reminder to women from around the world that anything is possible. Her dream as a child was to become a record holder within the sports industry, and today she stands one title away from tying Margaret Court’s all-time singles record (24) and two titles away from becoming a new record holder. Serena, who won her first major title at the US Open in 1999, has since made strides in the industry at an international level and has revolutionised the world of tennis for women across the globe. Her power play has seen her win more Grand Slam singles titles than any other tennis player in the Open Era.

Although she has experienced dips in form like after the 2017 Australian Open where she won 6-4, 6-4 against her sister Venus Williams. Serena has always bounced back. Following the birth of her child, she made a return when she won ASB Classic 2020 in Auckland defeating Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-4. I believe she can only do better from here onwards.

Serena is an inspiration to many across the globe and there is no doubt that many are rooting for her to take it home one more time at this year’s US Open in New York, which is set to take place behind closed doors between 31 August and 13 September. Here Williams will get to renew her quest for an all-time record-tying 24th Grand Slam title. She looks forward to returning to the court although her manager states that she might want to attend the US open with her daughter regardless of the limitations set by the Covid-19 regulations for the tournament.

Williams is also a supermom to her two and a half year old daughter, Olympia who is now the world’s youngest owner of a professional sports team, Angel City, after her and her mother became co-owners of the Los Angeles-based womens’ football team. Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian (ex-member of Reddit Board of Directors) led the investment for the team as a way of giving her daughter front row access to a sport she has shown great interest in during their father-daughter bonding moments. The mother and daughter can also be seen out on the tennis court together.

Serena William is truly a phenomenal woman. She holds more
than just the title of a world-class athlete and a supermom. Williams is also a
businesswoman and a philanthropist. The savvy entrepreneur with her own fashion line (Serena Williams) designs and successfully manages the line of
clothing, handbags and jewellery.

That’s it for this week’s edition of Sports Crush Saturday.
