Race 4.

A 4yr old and a 3yr old filly could fight out the finish to this race and secure the exacta, but NIFFLER is given the nod for top spot. She was friendless in the betting markets when finishing well to win by 0.8L when making her debut over 1500M. She was immediately rested for 33 weeks and returns here after having had two barrier trials, winning the latest. From her handy draw three, she could prove good enough to complete her double. FIELD WIRI followed up her penultimate run victory over five furlongs with a fifth place finish next time out over 1100M, just over a length and a half behind the winner. She jumped awkwardly that day and was crowded shortly after the start, but stayed on well over the business end of affairs and the form of that race has been franked. From gate five, she should be right up there when they hit the line. GROOVER jumped awkwardly, but recovered well to lead the field into the home straight, before holding off all the late challengers to win first time out over six furlongs by just over one and a half lengths, despite shifting out over the closing stages. He is drawn one outside the latter and should keep the fillies honest.

Race 5.

With the late scratching of one of his main rivals, the door may have opened for today’s best bet, HYPNOSIS to chalk up his maiden victory. He has finished closer to the winner in each of his last three runs, the latest when second over 1100M, one length back from the victor. He attracted plenty of betting support that day, but overraced in the early stages, before hitting the front at the 300M mark. The gelding was only run out of it very late, but gets a cozy draw two and will have ex-SA jockey Brandon Lerena in the irons, so he will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle. The fact that his connections have brought him back into racing after such a lengthy absence would also seem to suggest that they believe that he still has something more to offer them. KYALLA returns from a shorter 19 week rest and has had the benefit of two barrier trials, finishing second in the latest to showcase her well-being. She is a 4yr old filly taking on the boys and did finish seventh last time out over 1100M, 13.2L adrift of the winner, but she floundered in the heavy track conditions that day and that effort is best ignored. She is drawn the widest of them all in gate twelve, but she should use her early gate speed to move across without expending too much energy. BELLEPLAINE is another 4yr old filly in the race. She finished second over six furlongs first time out and then followed that up with a disappointing twelfth place finish next time out over six furlongs, eleven and a half lengths behind the winner and was put away for 21 weeks. She returns here without having had a barrier trial, so her fitness will have to be taken on trust and will have to negotiate gate eight, but she will be hoping to bounce back to her debut effort.

Race 6.

MACCOMO had solid form before jumping awkwardly and then being hampered over the closing stages to end up in fifth place last time out over 1900M, 13.7L behind the winner. He takes a big drop in distance and has his first run since a 19 week break, but he did finish third in the latest of two barrier trials. He faces a wide draw ten, but on the plus side, he will have 1.5kgs taken off his back for the services of his claiming apprentice and as such, is made the value bet on the day’s program. NEVER SECOND is a 4yr old filly taking on males and returns from a shorter 15 week absence and two encouraging barrier trials. She had her consistency rewarded with a 1.3L victory last time out over five furlongs and the form of that contest has been franked. She has her first run for her new trainer and if fully settled into her new surroundings, she should give a good account of herself here, jumping from a kinder gate two. GLITTERY is a 3yr old filly who came five wide into the home stretch, but battled all the way down to the wire when winning her latest outing over 1100M by half a length. She resumes after a 21 week spell, but has had the two barrier trials and from draw five, she should not be lightly dismissed.

Race 7.

BAK DA MAN finished strongly after being slow away when winning his last start over 1500M by two lengths, suggesting that the extra ground on offer here will be to his liking. He also came five wide into the home straight that day, which makes the effort that much more encouraging. He gets gate six and will have his peak run after returning from a 20 week break. A 5yr old mare and a 4yr old filly could chase him home, with the slight preference going to BUBA who won her penultimate start over 1500M and then finished sixth next time out over 1500M, 3.3L behind the winner, notwithstanding coming three wide into the home straight. She jumps from draw three and should be right up there in the mix. CAROLINA FIRE also won her penultimate outing over 1500M and then finished second over the same c&d next time out, 2.8L back from the winner. She tried to go from jump to wire that day and was only collared late. From draw seven, she should be included in all bets.
