Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (Grade 1)
Race 7 – $2,000,000
22:54 – Saturday 2nd November 2019 (SA Time)

Since the defection of Magical at the start of the week the focus of attention has been on Chad Brown’s outstanding SISTERCHARLIE and is there anything capable of preventing the 5yo repeating her 2018 success, when she grittily repelled Wild Illusion in a memorable set to in the final quarter mile. She has continued to flourish with successive Grade 1 triumphs in the Diana, the BeverleyD and the Flower Bowl and under Johnny Velazquez has effectively mopped up the best races in her domain, whilst looking alert and assured in her training this week.

Aidan O’Brien has the consolation of looking towards FLEETING to fill the shoes of Magical and there’s plenty to like about a filly who appeared to be given too much to do when just under six lengths adrift of Sistercharlie in the Arlington race. Furthermore Fleeting also came back with a genuine excuse when a strong finishing fourth behind Star Catcher in the Champion Fillies & Mares at Ascot where she was boxed in but picked up in eye catching fashion to run into the money. She’s shipped well and looked in good heart when going out onto the track on Thursday. Although she is 0-6 at this level, she’s always appealed as the type that can pick up a Group 1.

VILLA MARINA has similarly strong claims based on her flying finish that got her close to Star Catcher in the Prix Vermeille and she was gameness personified when landing the Prix de l’Opera from Watch Me. Her trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias has been delighted with her this week, and she looks sure to make an impact.

With Enable in winter quarters John Gosden is back at his old haunt to saddle FANNY LOGAN in this. Although winning her last four, it’s a big step up for the daughter of Sea The Stars who has Frankie Dettori in the plate. The Italian was on board for her win at Newmarket last time and breezed her on the turf on Wednesday. Gosden is aware that it’s a step up the ladder for Fanny Logan but he’s right when stating the application of a hood and decision to bring this filly back in trip have been the making of her.

Joseph O’Brien’s IRIDESSA looked to be beaten fair and square in the Sun Chariot but her Pretty Polly and Matron Stakes victories back 8n Ireland stamp her a top line operator. It’s just a worry that her best form has been at home.

Last year’s 1,000 Guineas winner BILLESDON BROOK comes here off her doughty triumph in the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at HQ. It’s a sporting bid by her owners and her overall profile is solid, but she hasn’t particularly impressed me with her overall demeanour this week, and I’m not siding with her.
