International Racing: Cranbourne – Friday 22 May 2020

A small, but competitive eight-race programme is scheduled for Cranbourne on Thursday. The best bet is BOOMSTOCK in Race 6. He has finished runner-up in both of his starts this campaign and looks overdue another victory. He should be tough to beat this afternoon.

Race 1
PEGGY SELENE finished runner-up in both of her starts and will have undeniably strengthened during the layoff. The daughter of Rubick faces a competitive group of juveniles though and some caution is advised. PATENTED made an eye-catching debut and is another one who may have benefitted from a short rest. He has obvious scope for improvement and could be the biggest danger to the top selection. POCKET GODESS and NIGHT OF DELIGHT weren’t separated by much last time out at Warnambool, and both of them have the scope to progress and win this contest.

Race 2
DROP THE MIC has placed in both of his efforts this campaign and was only beaten half a length at the wire last time out. With more yielding conditions expected, one can expect another big run from him. PARIS PIKE needed his last run after a break and he should relish the rise in trip. He has been costly to follow since his eye-catching debut effort but still has obvious scope for improvement. TORNADO FLAME is a filly taking on males. She performed her career-best last time out at Werribee when beaten by Catcha Spark and if reproducing that effort on this track, she could be involved in the finish.

Race 3
CHARM WING is going along the right way and could exit the maiden ranks this afternoon. She only found one better last time out on this track and looks the one to beat on form. DANCE READY has only finished out of the money on one occasion though and he won’t make things easy for the top selection. MODULO made a smart return to the races when he was only swamped late on this track. He will strip fitter and could make amends for that defeat.

Race 4
DESIGNER CHEF is yet to run a bad race and is likely to be up with the speed in this contest. He has a creditable victory at this course and he merits obvious inclusion, despite shouldering top weight. LA CROFT disappointed last time when in search of the hat-trick but wasn’t ultimately disgraced. That formline hasn’t worked out badly with one winner coming out of that race since. SLICK BACK had some consistent form prior to his layoff and if returning a fit horse, he will definitely have a say in this contest.

Race 5
BLACK AND TAN is a mare taking on males. She is returning from a five-week break after an impressive victory at Warracknabeal, if racing fresh he could follow up in this contest. SOUTH STREET BOSS caught the eye in his first run after a rest and he should strip a much fitter horse. THE EXECUTIONER failed last time out when strongly fancied but he is likely to settle off the pace and he should produce a strong effort in the latter stages.

Race 6
The Mick Price trained BOOMSTOCK has placed in both of his starts over this distance. He just failed last time out when narrowly beaten by Zachas and looks hard to oppose in this field. NANGAWOOKA’S last win was just four weeks ago and he doesn’t mind yielding conditions which are predicted for this meeting. His rider was arguably guilty of moving too early in the straight last time out and more patient tactics may be opted for today. CRIMSON ACE is an ultra-consistent mare and she should run into the places with Regan Bayliss aboard.

Race 7
The son of Galileo SMOKIN PIERRO hasn’t won for 41 weeks but he put in a bold effort last time out at Swan Hill when he was doing his best work in the dying stages of the race. He raced wide on that occasion and could represent good each way value in an open race. FLORIDA DREAM should have finished a lot closer last time out if not for entering the straight very wide and the chestnut must have claims on his prior form. MONMOUTH placed on this track just seven days ago. He will not be short of race-fitness and can make a quick turnaround.

Race 8
The New Zealand bred FLAG EDITION goes for a trio of wins and she could notch up the hat-trick if relishing the step up in trip. Billy Egan has been aboard in both of her recent triumphs and the pair look difficult to oppose in this contest. The other New Zealand bred mare DIAMONDSANDBUBBLES won her last start in this class and it will be no surprise to see her repeat that effort. She renews a healthy rivalry with TOUCH OF MINK who could be another serious contender in this hotly contested Fillies and Mares race. STELLAR IMPACT failed to pull off the hat-trick last time out after a break but it must be noted that the rider dropped the whip at the 200m mark and she can make a swift return to the winner’s enclosure.
