Neil Morrice brings you all of his best bets and tips for Tuesday’s racing coming your way from Southwell and Wolverhampton.
SOUTHWELL
Race 4 No:2 TACKESLIKEAFERRET
Trainer: Robin Brisland – Jockey: Paul Mulrennan
There’s not much depth in this maiden, so the potential for improvement of TACKLESLIKEAFERRET can prove the key. The gelding was ignored in the betting on debut over course and distance but ran into the money behind Mount Mayon. He seems certain to step up on that promising effort for a stable that’s been amongst the winners here.
Race 5 No:1 CUSTARD THE DRAGON
Trainer: John Mackie – Jockey: Graham Lee
CUSTARD THE DRAGON has shown on his last two starts here that he’s on the cusp of a deserved return to the winner’s circle. He’s been in a battle with the assessor but looks to be in a race he can win with a jockey booked that gets the best out of him.
Race 6 No:4 WRATH OF HECTOR (Nap)
Trainer: Mike Appleby – Jockey: Theo Ladd
Locally trained WRATH OF HECTOR has a good earning record when Ladd takes the reins with the combination delivering here before Christmas. Turned over when strong in the market moved up to a mile last time, the combination can go one better over this more suitable seven furlongs.
WOLVERHAMPTON
Race 1 No:13 DECONSO (Each Way)
Trainer: Chris Kellett – Jockey: Hollie Doyle
DECONSO always needs luck in running, and while the rub of the green has eluded him so far this season the return of Hollie Doyle to his saddle could prove keynote to a closer finish. As long as the combination can gain a position from their draw on the rail he’s in with solid claims of an earning run, but the first 100 yards will be crucial.
Race 3 No:4 NIGHT BEAR
Trainer: Tony Carroll – Jockey: Tom Marquand
Respect is afforded to Horn Of Plenty in this interesting handicap but NIGHT BEAR will offer value with Marquand an eye taking booking for the Dragon Pulse gelding. Carroll is a master at improving horses from other stables and should find that his runner is ready to step up on an encouraging frame finish when completely unfancied at Lingfield on New Year’s Eve.
Race 4 No:8 NEW EXCEED (Nap)
Trainer: Charlie Appleby – Jockey: Hollie Doyle
Amongst a good book of rides for Doyle is NEW EXCEED who is by Derby winner New Approach out of an Exceed And Excel mare. The filly lacks experience but is the subject of encouraging reports from Newmarket.
Race 5 No: 6 MILITARY TACTIC (Each Way)
Trainer: Ben Pauling – Jockey: Joey Haynes
A rare runner for this stable on the all-weather, MILITARY TACTIC has to be taken seriously even though he’s been done no favours with the draw. The former Godolphin inmate earned on each of his final three of four starts for Saeed Bin Suroor before being purchased out of the bargain basement following problems. The Iffraaj gelding has ability as shown when third on only previous all-weather start at this course.
