Exeter Best Bets
Race 4: DOSTAL PHIL (3)
Trainer: Philip Hobbs
Jockey: Richard Johnson
Described by Hobbs as one of the best-handicapped horses in his yard earlier in the season, DOSTAL PHIL reverts to this maiden hurdle having been given a softly campaign. He put a blip at Cheltenham in November behind him by going down by a short head to Laughing Luis at Newbury and would have won but for hanging. He’s not the easiest of rides, but clearly talented and should win this.
Race 6: KAVANAGHS CORNER (2)
Trainer: Simon Earle
Jockey: Daryl Jacob
Coming back in distance after scoring over two miles and three furlongs at this track last time, KAVANAGHS CORNER will love the ground and can follow up. He’s a wonderfully consistent servant to his connections and will greatly enjoy the cut in the ground.
Plumpton Best Bets
Race 5: VICENZO MIO (3)
Trainer: Chris Gordon
Jockey: Tom Cannon
Unconsidered in the betting on latest start at Sandown, VICENZO MIO belied those odds for most of the two miles trip and only weakened up the final hill. It was an encouraging run, and one that should have brought the selection sufficiently forward to surprise the likes of Le Capricieux and The Dubai Way.
Race 6: GET UP THEM STEPS (2)
Trainer: John O’Shea
Jockey: Jamie Moore
If his fitness is not an issue GET UP THEM STEPS can take advantage of a good opportunity here. He left his debut effort behind to trouble the judge at Ludlow but that was back in December. However, it proved he can handle easy conditions and he skipped an opportunity last week as this looked a better one.
Southwell Best Bets
Race 1: DJIN CONTI (2)
Trainer: Harry Whittington
Jockey: Gavin Sheehan
Whittington has opted for this over a number of entries for DJIN CONTI this week and the hint should be taken. The six-year-old shaped encouragingly to place on his debut over fences at Newbury and is expected to come on for that. He’s described by his trainer as a natural jumper.
Race 6: EYES RIGHT (8)
Trainer: Alan King
Jockey: Oakley Brown
In receipt of a stone from Yeavering Belle this is best left to EYES RIGHT who hails from a stable running into form. Although Yeavering Belle ran out an impressive scorer at Warwick, Eyes Right contested a better race and shaped promisingly to finish fourth to Silver Forever. I will be surprised if a repeat of that wouldn’t be good enough to win this.
Navan Best Bets
Race 2: EJAYTEEKAY (9)
Trainer: Gavin Cromwell
Jockey: Paul Townend
Fresh from their respective high profile triumphs at the Cheltenham Festival, Cromwell and Townend appeal as a potent combination with EJAYTEE KAY in this. Although Serious Ego deserves respect after his clear cut Leopardstown win, Ejayteekay really caught my eye at Naas where he was unlucky in running in Ming Dynasty’s race. Granted a fast pace to aim at and racing room at the finish, he can go close.
Race 6: THE BIG GETAWAY (17)
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Jockey: Mr P Mullins
THE BIG GETAWAY grabbed the imagination of the crowd at the Horse And Jockey point-to-point as he came home by a distance, leaving a lasting impression that he might be more than useful. Now representing top connections, he can endorse that promise on the way to better things.
