Race 5

The day’s best bet, BENAUD has run in feature races in his last three outings, the latest when eighth over ten furlongs, 7.2L behind the winner, but he jumped awkwardly that day, bumping another runner, but still managed to stay on well over the closing stages. He gets a handy draw two and could prove hard to topple.

SKY OUT tried to go from jump to wire when ending up in third place last time out over twelve furlongs, just a head back from the victor. He is drawn the widest of them all in gate nine, but he is likely to adopt the same tactics here and could emerge as the biggest danger to the top choice.

FLEET COMMANDER showed marked improvement to win his maiden race last time out over 1900M by one and a half lengths. He has his peak run since arriving in Australia from Ireland and a repeat of that last effort from gate five, he should be involved in the finish.

Race 6

Two 3yr old and a 4yr old filly could fight out the finish to this race and complete the trifecta, but QUEEN ASTRID is taken to lead the field home. She had her consistency rewarded with her maiden victory last time out over 1500M by one and a half lengths. She jumped awkwardly, finding herself towards the rear of the field in that event, but delivered a powerful finish to win going away. She has pulled a wideish draw eight and faces stronger here, but she is likely to be dropped out of it in the early stages and then start to pick off the front runners over the latter part of the race.

ALWAYS IN is seldom far off the action, finishing second last time out over seven furlongs, 2.3L back from the winner. She jumped awkwardly in that contest and had to be held up at the top of the home straight, but finished well over the latter stages. She jumps from a useful draw four and should be right up there when they hit the line.

She renews her rivalry with OAKFIELD REDGUM who finished fourth in the race mentioned above, just over three lengths adrift of the victor, but she was bumped at the start and came five wide into the home straight. She is drawn in gate six and as the pair meet on the same weight terms today, she may well have to settle for the same result.

Race 7

CAPTAIN BOND has consistent formlines to his name and followed up his penultimate run victory over five furlongs with a sixth-place finish next time out over the same sprint trip, two lengths back from the winner. It should however be noted that he was slow away that day and then came the widest of them all into the home straight, before finishing off his race well. He returns from a 25-week spell but has won his only barrier trial to prove his fitness. The gelding has a cosy draw two and is made the value bet on the day’s card.

ORLABENT goes for his hat-trick after victories over 1100M and the latest over six furlongs by a length. He struck the front at the top of the home stretch that day and then held off all the late challengers in the dash down to the wire. Despite a wide draw nine, the trio is very much on the cards.

ZANZIBAR GEM is the stable companion to the latter and is drawn one outside him. She is a 4yr old filly taking on the boys, but she won her penultimate run over 1100M and then finished fourth next time out over the same c&d, just a length behind the winner. She was returning from a 15-week rest that day and stayed on well and makes a solid backup for the yard.

Race 8

This looks to be a tricky race with plenty of runners in with a realistic chance of finding the winner’s box, so some caution is suggested. The tentative first pick goes to INVICTUS LAD who came the widest of them all into the home straight, but battled all the way down to the wire to end up in fourth spot last time out over seven furlongs, 1.7L off the victor. The gelding will have to negotiate gate nine, but he should turn in another honest performance here.

LEASE raced three wide throughout, and his jockey put up 1kg overweight, when finishing eighth last time out over 1100M, just under five lengths back from the winner. From his kinder draw five, he will be having his peak run for his new trainer after returning from a 22-week rest.

SIR GODRIC has cracked pole position and finished sixth in his latest outing over six furlongs, 4.7L behind the winner, but he did jump awkwardly, bumping another runner in that contest. He was returning from a 22-week break that day and will have ex-SA jockey Keagan Latham in the irons, so the gelding will get all the necessary assistance from the saddle.
