Magic Tips Best Bets

TOP BET
Race 2: CAPTAIN’S VISTA(4)
Jockey: Raymond DANIELSON – Trainer: Tara LAING

CAPTAIN’S VISTAis best in at the weights on official ratings in this novice contest and he could take a power of beating, if handling the rise in distance. The Tara Laing inmate is a lightly raced four-year-old who made steady progress on his fair first effort in this province two weeks ago. The former KZN resident was returning from a 20-week break so may have needed the run and he should be fitter today. He showed good promise last season and the manner in which he finished last time indicates that he could enjoy this distance. The son of Captain Al is drawn best of all and he drops in class here.

Race 4: SCENT(2)

Jockey: Aldo DOMEYER – Trainer: Alan GREEFF

The versatile gelding SCENT is in great form locally and he holds strong claims in this lower class. That said, the real worry is that there may not be a solid gallop which he seems to require to be at his best.

Race 5: GOLDEN CRISP(5)
Jockey: Juan-Paul VAN DER MERVE – Trainer: Gavin SMITH

GOLDEN CRISP has benefitted greatly from being equipped with blinkers and she made huge improvement in her last two starts. The daughter of Atso finished strongly for her eye-catching maiden win over this c & d in her penultimate run. She followed that up with a running on 3rd behind two useful sorts over six furlongs at novice level a fortnight ago and now has her handicap debut. She again meets some fair three-year-olds but still has room for further progress and merits healthy respect.

Race 7: BREATHLESS BERTIE(6)

Jockey: Ryan MUNGER – Trainer: Yvette BREMNER

The Pataudi formline on 30/09 could be worth following in this competitive five-furlong dash. The usually speedy BREATHLESS BERTIE is holding his form well and he surprisingly performed extremely well despite being given a chance in a top field over this c & d, two weeks ago. He ran on for 2nd behind the top class Villa Del Largo that day and only tired late in the penultimate run, referred to above. The chestnut gelding finished a head adrift of SIMPLY BLACK in that prior start and the pair meet on similar weight terms. Both runners are at their absolute best over today’s minimum trip and despite awkward draws, they should produce an exciting clash.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:
Race 8: REEVAS QUEEN(4)
Jockey: Ryan MUNGER – Trainer: HEKKIE STRYDOM

REEVAS QUEEN benefitted from blinkers on Monday and though she didn’t have the clearest passsage, the inmate from the Hekkie Strydom yard finished eye-catchingly for a close 4th in a similar handicap. She was returning from a 13-week absence so will strip fitter and her trainer is renowned for racing them with success over such a short space of time. The bay filly is better drawn today and she is the yard’s only entrant on the card.
