Hardly surprisingly, this qualified maiden contest is extremely difficult, filled with mostly moderate sorts. The filly NORTHERN STORM could be better than her record indicates though and the engaging of top jockey Marcus is encouraging. The daughter of Noordhoek Flyer has shown some fair form with her best performances coming over this minimum distance. That said, she probably should have been closer but for some traffic issues over seven furlongs recently. She had one fair effort on this track and the equipping of blinkers tonight, could make the difference. Trainer Gavin van Zyl’s charge is well drawn at gate 4 and the bay filly will relish the likely blistering pace.
Race 4: ARCTIC SWIFT(8)
Jockey: Anton MARCUS – Trainer: Gavin VAN ZYL
This is another tricky maiden contest where jockey engagements could help in the final outcome. Top jockey Anton Marcus partners ARCTIC SWIFT, despite going close aboard FLORRICK late last month. His mount did show improvement in her comeback run after her moderate debut. She attracted outside betting support over this track & trip that day but weakened in the closing stages after failing to jump on terms. That said, the daughter of Var is obviously showing decent work back home and she will strip fitter tonight. She has cracked the best draw and has obvious scope for progress.
Race 7: SMART WORLD(9)Jockey: Calvin HABIB – Trainer: Dennis DRIER
There are quite a few form runners in this low-key handicap, featuring a dozen entrants but once again a likely decent gallop should enable a fair result. The top rating SMART WORLD is suited to this track after he posted an effortless maiden victory over ten furlongs here in June. He made eye-catching late headway in his last two handicap attempts at a similar level on this course and could be a real threat with an in-form 2.5kgs claiming apprentice in the saddle. The Ideal World gelding still has room for improvement and he is possibly ahead of the handicapper.
Race 8: MANOUCHE(7)
Jockey: Anton MARCUS – Trainer: Dennis DRIER
This is an intriguing final event on the night and in stark contrast to the previous contests, there could be a lack of pace so jockey tactics could be vital. Top jockey Anton Marcus partners the chestnut colt MANOUCHE who has solid form but tackles this distance for the first time in his short career. The Dennis Bosch inmate had three useful attempts on this course as a juvenile and he may have needed his seasonal debut on the grass over shorter. However, he was making late progress that day and clearly has more to offer. The likely sedate gallop will play into his hands and the son of Gitano Hernando is a major contender.

This is a wide open fillies and mares handicap that may be run at a decent pace which should ensure a true result. The formline to follow could be the Pearl Emblem run over seven furlongs on 07/10 and the narrow first selection is the evergreen seven-year-old, VOGUE IDEA, who enjoys a 4kgs apprentice allowance. This bay mare is c & d suited and she got going too late when finishing just out of the placings at a similar level in the event referred to above. She has a neck to find on STOCKADE but is 5kgs to the good and is better drawn than that rival.
