Race 2: VILLANELLE(5)
Race 6: GREEN LANTERN(1)
Race 7: ETERNAL WINTER(12)

Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 2: VILLANELLE(5)
Jockey: Luyolo MXOTHWA – Trainer: Grant PADDOCK

This is a competitive maiden fillies & mares contest that should yield an exciting finish. VILLANELLE is the pick of the locals despite her slightly below-par last outing. She had smart form prior to that including going close over this trip on her seasonal debut. The daughter of Gitano Hernando posted equally good juvenile performances and she can make amends for that last showing. She is c & d suited and has strong claims on her third run back from the 23-week break.

Race 5: SIR DUKE(3)

Jockey: Raymond DANIELSON – Trainer: Tara LAING

SIR DUKE expectedly bounced back to form on the polytrack a fortnight ago and he can build on that recent improvement. He was weighted to emerge victorious but perhaps just needed the outing after returning from a nine-week break. His conqueror was touched off next time out which boosts the form and this son of Trippi will be fitter today. The veteran gelding has a bit to do at the weights with VILLA DEL LARGO but his pace is his biggest asset and he may prove hard to peg back over the final furlong. He was comfortably beaten by the latter three runs back but was returning from a lengthy absence and could be an entirely different proposition today. The latter is in great form, having completed a hat-trick of wins recently. He holds a smart c & d record and is extremely well treated by the weights on official ratings. Nevertheless, he will be severely tested today.

TOP BET
Race 6: COCK-A-HOOP(2)
Jockey: Aldo
DOMEYER – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

Some quality three-year olds go to post for this listed topliner and with just eight entrants present, there could be a lack of pace. The likely sedate gallop will suit the Snaith charge, COCK-A-HOOP perfectly and the improving colt could take a power of beating. The son of Western Winter took six runs to shed his maiden tag but he has improved smartly since and he quickened impressively to win his local debut over seven furlongs on the polytrack in a feature, four weeks ago. He holds many of today’s rivals safe at the weights on that showing and is bred to relish the mile.

Race 8: DANCE IN THE WOODS(12)

Jockey: Ryan MUNGER – Trainer: Jacques STRYDOM

DANCE IN THE WOODS is usually consistent and she performed better than rated when running on for a decent 4th in her comeback sprint over six furlongs on the polytrack at novice level, three weeks ago. The chestnut mare will be fitter and this is her best trip. She will prefer racing on today’s handicap terms and could be a huge threat with her low mass. The former Cape resident has a decent record on this track and is well drawn at gate 5.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:
Race 7: ETERNAL WINTER(12)
Jockey: Juan-Paul v.d.MERWE – Trainer: Gavin SMITH

This is a very tricky low-key fillies and mares handicap and caution is advised. ETERNAL WINTER has reached a competitive merit rating and it showed with her improved last performance in a stronger handicap over eleven furlongs. She was running on well at the finish for 2nd and had a few of today’s rivals behind her. Interestingly, the daughter of Western Winter was docked a further two pounds in her rating and she holds a solid track record. The bay mare has another galloping mass despite her dip in class.
