TOP BET

Race 8: MARINARESCO(11)
Jockey: Grant VAN NIEKERK – Trainer: Mike BASS

This isn’t a vintage field for the renewal of this Grade 1 nine furlong contest which is further complicated by the presence of just a solitary natural frontrunner who could set a false gallop. Howe- ver, even that may not stop the top class gelding MARINARESCO from sending his champion trainer into retirement on a winning note in a race named in his honour. The smashing Silvano gelding has always shown class but he has come into his own since the operation in late January. His explosive late burst for a close 2nd in the July on unfavourable weight terms underlined his brilliance, particularly in that slow run contest from a poor draw. The drop in distance should pose little issue and the top selection should take a power of beating.

Race 9: OLMA(1)

Jockey: Ian STURGEON – Trainer: Frank ROBINSON

OLMA has confirmed her brilliance at the highest level in her hometown and she finished strongly for a close 2nd behind multiple Grade 1 winner Inara over the mile, earlier this month. She is extremely well treated by today’s weights and the seven-time winning daughter of Dynasty has won over this ten furlongs. She has an impressive turn of foot which should come into play in today’s likely false run affair and the bay filly will take a power of beating.

Race 10: BARBOSA(1)

Jockey: Sean VEALE – Trainer: Dennis DRIER

Last year’s winner BARBOSA has come a long way since then and he recently campaigned in a trio of Grade 1 events, with a 3rd place finish on the Highveld the best he has to show for his efforts. The Drier inmate was far from disgraced when staying on from a poor draw over six furlongs on the grass last time & he dips significantly in class this evening. His polytrack record is very smart & despite the deserved top weight, the six-year old son of Captain Al should once again take all the beating in this contest.

Race 11: NIGHT TRIP(1)

Jockey: Anton MARCUS – Trainer: Mike BASS

The Mike Bass yard could be at it again here as their six-year old charge NIGHT TRIP aims to defend his title in this event, and in the process maintain his 100% record on the polytrack. The son of Trippi had a brilliant prep run for this event as he ran on smartly for 2nd in a Grade 1 sprint over six furlongs a fortnight ago. The top weight has an obvious affinity for this surface and few will forget his explosive late burst with Marcus up in this race 12 months ago. He is once again the one to beat.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 1: SEEK THE SUMMIT(2)
Jockey: Gavin LERENA – Trainer: Dennis BOSCH

A competitive seven furlong opening event on the polytrack and there should be some decent value on offer. The Dennis Bosch inmate SEEK THE SUMMIT has posted both of her career wins over this c & d and she showed some signs of a form return in her last two runs. She was running on steadily when 4th against male rivals over this track & trip, two weeks ago. She will certainly enjoy facing her own sex today and the engaging of outgoing champion jockey Gavin Lerena is a major plus. The daughter of Elusive Fort jumps from a midfield barrier.
