Magic Tips Best Bets

Race 2: MOON PRINCESS(5)
Jockey: Karl ZECHNER – Trainer: Glen KOTZEN

Once again a competitive field heads to post here and the Glen Kotzen yard holds another strong hand. However, the lesser fancied MOON PRINCESS could represent decent each/way value and she gets the nod. The daughter of Dupont, just like her stablemate, has only raced at Durbanville in her short career. She has improved with each effort and only tired late over a mile in a competitive line-up, two weeks ago. This slight drop in trip should be right up her alley and the bay filly has a fair draw on her track debut. She certainly has further scope for improvement.

Top Bet

Race 3: CAPTAIN COURTEOUS(3)
Jockey: Gavin LERENA – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

CAPTAIN COURTEOUS has come a long way since his infamous defeat in PE in June and the Snaith charge is seeking a hat-trick of victories. He caused a major stir when quickening smartly to beat a stronger handicap field in yielding conditions over this c & d last time out and seems to have escaped with just a four pound penalty. Interestingly, the son of Captain Al was gelded after that latest triumph and he clearly appears on the up. He drops in class and should give another very good account of himself.

Race 4: ULTIMATE DOLLAR(1)
Jockey: Brandon MAY – Trainer: Justin SNAITH

With just seven runners heading to post for this highly competitive handicap, there is the obvious concern with regards to the pace. The Justin Snaith yard holds a very strong hand and interestingly, both the stable’s entrants are capable with frontrunning tactics. However, the engaging of 2.5kgs claiming apprentice May aboard ULTIMATE DOLLAR is an indication that this son of Jet Master could be the dictator. Whilst his recent form is dismal, it must be noted that he faced far stronger than today’s opposition and possibly battled to recover from his escapade to Gauteng. He had a poor season- al debut in a local feature three weeks ago but will strip fitter today and he drops heavily in class. The five-year-old gelding has a solid track record and most interestingly, his last victory came when dictating his own tempo over further.

Race 8: MARINARESCO(1)

Jockey: Grant VAN NIEKERK – Trainer: Candice BASS-ROBINSON

The brilliant MARINARESCO was a revelation after being gelded in January and he deserved his last Grade 1 triumph following a string of top class displays, including a narrow defeat in the Durban July. He has his seasonal debut over six furlongs today but such is the class of the son of Silvano that he can still emerge victorious, particularly as he races fresh after a deserved 13 week absence. The Bass-Robinson inmate is best in at the weights on official ratings.

VALUE BET (EACH WAY) FOR TODAY:

Race 5: ORIENTAL OAK(13)
Jockey: Anthony ANDREWS – Trainer: Glen KOTZEN

This is a tricky fillies and mares handicap but the three-year-olds could have the upper hand over their more exposed older rivals. The Glen Kotzen stable once again holds a decent hand and ORIENTAL OAK could provide the upset on her track debut. The well-bred daughter of Silvano proved that she is above-average with a smart maiden victory over seven furlongs as a juvenile, second time out, during her KZN stint. She had subsequent winner Joy To Joy and her stable companion WHITE ROSE behind her that day but fluffed her lines badly in a minor feature next time out. That certainly wasn’t her run though and her conditioner rested her for 18 weeks. She appeared badly in need of her comeback sprint on her home debut but will be fitter today and should relish the rise in distance. She is drawn in midfield and still has good scope for progress.
