JOCKEY Comments:
Bernard Fayd’Herbe had words of encouragement for supporters of top weight Marinaresco, saying: “We are hoping for a big run. He has a nice draw, we just need luck in running and things to happen for us in the race.”

“Marinaresco ran below expectations in his last run but he has come on since that effort and I will be working him again on Thursday. He is a small horse carrying a big weight and also against him is the fact that the July can be a pretty rough race. If things go his way I am expecting a big race from him.”

TRAINER Comments:
“Marinaresco is doing well at home, his work has been good and all is very much on song,” said Robert Fayd’Herbe, Candice Bass- Robinson’s KZN assistant.

Trainer Candice Bass-Robinson: “He is doing very well and is as well as can be. Unfortunately, he carries a big weight for a small horse but he does have a good draw which means that jockey Fayd’Herbe will be able to give him a chance early on. He is a horse who MUST be given a chance early on and then he will be able to use his powerful finish to good advantage. I am sure he will be thereabouts at the finish.”

MAGIC TIPS (Winning Form) Comment:
3rd run after rest. Brilliant sort who narrowly failed in this race last year. Hasn’t been at his best this campaign but excuse his last run when probably raced too handy and jockey felt something amiss. The bay gelding has his peak showing and the likely slow gallop will certainly assist the top weight. His brilliant turn of foot is always a huge plus on this circuit and his top jockey is sure to give him a chance this time around. Should improve on his last run.

Verdict: Not at his best this season but don’t discount.

HOLLYWOODBETS Comments:

  • Marinaresco finished runner-up in the 2016 Vodacom Durban July, finishing a quarter-length behind The Conglomerate
  • This will be his eighth Grade 1 event. He has won one of these, ironically the event being the Mike and Carol Bass Champions Cup.
  • Candice Bass-Robinson is the daughter of now retired champion trainer Mike Bass. He trained three Durban July winners – Trademark (2001), Dunford (2005), and Pocket Power (2008 – DH with Dancer’s Daughter).
  • Candice Bass-Robinson has three runners in this Vodacom Durban July 2017 field. This includes MARINARESCO, NIGHTINGALE, and HORIZON.
  • Jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe was the pilot on Pocket Power when he dead-heated with Dancer’s Daughter in the 2008 Durban July.
  • Fayd’Herbe has won the Vodacom Durban July once, and the Sun Met three times (previously known as the J&B Met). He has won more than 20 Grade 1 races.
  • Marinaresco is the lone horse carrying the top weight  of 60kg in this year’s race. Only one horse has won the Vodacom Durban July under top weight since El Picha scored for the second time in 2000 and that was Pocket Power in 2008.
  • Marinaresco will run in the same silks as that of 2008 Durban July winner Pocket Power.
