VAR AGTIG found solid betting support when she produced an exciting debut effort over this distance at Turffontein last month. The well-bred daughter of Var showed good speed and she challenged strongly before going down just over one length into 2nd at the wire. That first experience would have brought her on appreciably and she should continue to progress. This combination were victorious at this venue seven days ago.
Race 4: FORT INFINITY(1)
Jockey: Marco VAN RENSBURG – Trainer: Clinton BINDA
This is a competitive opening leg of the Jackpot and a big field heads to post. FORT INFINITY and RONIN WARRIOR possibly represent the strongest formline, albeit the pair were both beaten by two newcomers at Turffontein over a similar distance, recently. The former, who is the first selection, displayed plenty of speed and despite being tightened for room in the closing stages, he stayed on smartly for a close 4th, only a neck adrift of the latter.
Race 6: NATIONAL KEY(2)
Jockey: Gavin LERENA – Trainer: Brian WIID
This is a tricky handicap over the mile due to the absence of a natural pacesetter and with a host of top jockeys engaged, an exciting tactical race should materialize. NATIONAL KEY is probably at his maximum over the mile but he has faced considerably stronger and drops in class today. He had an improved last performance despite an awkward start and can cause the upset with former champion jockey Gavin Lerena in the irons.
Race 8: AMAZING VAR(8)
AMAZING VAR has improved in recent efforts and she followed up on her winning penultimate run with a creditable last display in slightly stronger company over a mile. The Var filly ran on again after setting the pace and she could get much closer to MOVIE AWARD (0.5kg worse off) over this seven furlongs today. Top jockey Gavin Lerena rides the four-year-old filly who won her only c & d effort. The latter is a game filly who runs very well for this 1.5kgs claimiing apprentice and she must be taken very seriously.
Race 7: ZAPPY CHOICE(7)
Jockey: Lyle HEWITSON – Trainer: Michael AZZIE
There is also the concern of a false pace in this fillies handicap over seven furlongs where an upset could be on the cards. That will suit the lightly raced grey filly ZAPPY CHOICE who returns from another lengthy absence. The imported daughter of Redoute’s Choice has obvious ability and she romped to an easy maiden win over a mile in just her third career outing. She tired late in her comeback run on her handicap debut but was returning from a long break and possibly needed the effort. She may be allowed to dictate terms over this seven furlongs and must be strongly considered for her in-form yard.
