The Grade 1 feature on Champions Day at Greyville is the R1 million Mike and Carol Bass Champions Cup, which takes place over 1800m. The race is aptly named after trainer Mike Bass who will be retiring at the end of the season, and handing over the reigns to his daughter Candice Robinson. Bass’s gelding MARINARESCO enters as the odds-on favourite, and will look to bring the curtain down on what has been a sterling career for the Cape trainer. There are no fewer than six horses who featured in the Vodacom Durban July, including St Tropez, Saratoga Dancer and It Is Written. MAGIC TIPS’s Predicted Finish and Preview
This isn’t a vintage field for the renewal of this Grade 1 nine furlong contest which is further complicated by the presence of just a solitary natural frontrunner who could set a false gallop.
Howe- ver, even that may not stop the top class gelding MARINARESCO from sending his champion trainer into retirement on a winning note in a race named in his honour. The smashing Silvano gelding has always shown class but he has come into his own since the operation in late January. His explosive late burst for a close 2nd in the July on unfavourable weight terms underlined his brilliance, particularly in that slow run contest from a poor draw. The drop in distance should pose little issue and the top selection should take a power of beating.
EXIT HERE was given a brilliant ride from the front as he kept finding to beat the likes of subsequent July winner The Conglomerate as well as 5th placed July finisher SARATOGA DANCER (4kgs worse off) over this c & d in the Cup Trial last time out. He could enjoy the run of the race and is weighted to be competitive with Weichong Marwing retaining the ride.
PUNTA ARENAS was an impressive winner of his last start and he is well-weighted here.
