Pirates are 12 points behind Chiefs having played the same number of games, while Sundowns are ten points adrift of the Glamour Boys, having played a game less.

And for this reason, Cardoso believes the Buccanneers simply have too much to do and their recent resurgence will be seen as having come a little too late in hindsight.

“It is for us to lose, it’s in our hands. We do have the advantage and I hope we can use it,” the 31-year-old told KickOff.

“Playing smaller teams is a tough challenge, as you saw when we played Black Leopards. The teams are coming out to play. Competition is getting tougher now.”

Pirates have won five of their last six games since Josef Zinnbauer took charge and look in menacing form, but Cardoso is confident their Soweto rivals won’t catch them.

“Pirates are starting to playing good football, which is a good thing, [but] I didn’t say they are a threat at all,” he added.

“There’s still quite a lot of points ahead of them, to be honest with you. I don’t see them catching us or going [close] to Sundowns either.”
