AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy says he felt Kaizer Chiefs would not be able to score against them in open play as they simply do not have quality up front in attack.

On Saturday in their DStv Premiership clash at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium, Chiefs came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with AmaZulu via Keagan Dolly’s penalty in the 93rd minute after Tapelo Xoki was controversially adjudged to have handled the ball in the area.

In an interview after Saturday’s match, McCarthy was happy with his sides performance and refereed to AmaKhosi’s lack of firepower upfront.

“It was a fantastic performance from the boys, you can’t fault them,” McCarthy said.

“We said if we marginalise our mistakes if we don’t give them giveaways, they won’t get into this game because they don’t have the quality.

“They don’t have the quality to open us up, to break through us and create clear goal-scoring opportunities. From the last few games we’ve seen, they are still finding their feet. I knew that was a disadvantage to them.

“If we used the mobility we have, because they went on the defensive, having a defender Njabulo Ngcobo playing in midfield with Nange and Cole Alexander.

“It was very defensive so we wanted to use the mobility of [Luvuyo] Memela, [Siphisihle] Maduna and [Matar] Cessay to get in behind, pick balls in the pocket and feed Bongz [Ntuli],” McCarthy added.

Next up for AmaZulu is CAF Champions League action on 15 October, after the international break, when they play TP Mazembe at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
