Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Irvin Khoza has issued an update on Kaizer Chiefs’ two unfulfilled December fixtures, saying the matter has been referred to the organisation’s legal department.

Amakhosi were hit hard by the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 late last year and requested a postponement of all their December fixtures after revealing that 36 members of the team and backroom staff had tested positive.

The Soweto giants failed to honour their Premiership fixtures against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows, prompting calls for the league’s governing body to take action.

Khoza has finally provided an update on the matter on Wednesday and issued an apology for the lengthy wait.

“Yes it took too long because of the complexity of the matter,” said Khoza, as quoted by iDiski Times.

“The PSL fixtures affect a lot of people and a lot of stakeholders. The PSL is a members organisation with their rules and the spirit is that the teams must play.

“We need to make sure we accommodate the members and not just deal with the rules punitive.

“The manual dictates that the football department is the one that deals with the fixtures.

“We met for a first time on 3rd December as Executive after we received the letter from Kaizer Chiefs about their Covid-19 outbreak.

“Having considered all the facts that were brought to us, as Executive Committee we have declined the request and the matter is currently with the legal divisions.

“It’s not easy for me to talk about the details because the process is still ongoing.

“We did the same when we dealt with the Royal AM-Sekhukhune issue, and well do the same now.

“For now I can just say that the matter is still part of the process. Let’s allow the process to unfold to its final conclusion.

“I don’t want to say anything now that will distort the process.”

The early indications are that Chiefs could forfeit the two games in question, meaning Cape Town City and Golden Arrows would be awarded a 3-0 victory respectively.
