The sides were evenly matched in the first half but a couple of tactical changes by the Sundowns coaching staff turned the tide in the Brazilians’ favour as Themba Zwane (51′), Safranko (61′, 72′) and Peter Shalulile (76′) got on the scoresheet, while Fortune Makaringe scored a consolation goal in the second minute of stoppage time.

In Sundowns’ previous match – a 2-1 win over Baroka FC -Safranko had come on as a substitute after 25 minutes to replace Shalulile only to be sacrificed after 75 minutes for defender Ricardo Nascimento as the Brazilians looked to preserve their lead.

Mokwena hailed Safranko’s attitude at the time for taking it very well and further sung the praises of the Slovak after putting that behind him in the best way after spearheading Downs to a big win over the Bucanneers.

“We’ve just got players who listen and are coachable, who are humble, you can see that if you look at who scored the goals, Pavol scored, we were a little bit unfair to him in the previous match, we took him off but no sulking, no attitude, comes back, gets an opportunity and does the job,” gushed Mokoena.
