The 2019/20 PSL season remains suspended after strict lockdown measures were implemented in March in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus in South Africa.

Most of the top European leagues have already resumed competitive action, but the PSL is yet to set a date for any potential restart.

But Wednesday’s announcement means teams can at least return to training, provided they are able to adhere to the strict Covid regulations put in place.

Part of the statement from Minister of Sport Nathi Mthethwa read: “The plans of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) have been approved‚ considering the mitigation strategies and plans in relation to the Level 3 risk adjusted strategy in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The different sport bodies are submitting their plans‚ indicating their state of readiness and the stringent health protocols they will implement in accordance with the prescribed Regulations and Directions.

“The plans have further been subject to analysis by Health authorities, the NICD (National Institute of Communicable Diseases) who have recommended that the measures put in place by the organisation meet and in some instances exceed the required protocol for a safe return to training and to play in a Biologically Safe Environment.”

More details are expected to emerge from an exco meeting on Thursday, said PSL senior manager Luxolo September.

All clubs will need to ensure the safety of their staff and players with comprehensive testing before training can resume.

A number of players have already been found to have contracted Covid-19 after a round of testing at clubs.

Orlando Pirates, Bloemfontein Celtic, TS Galaxy and Stellenbosch FC have all reported positive Covid-19 cases.
