PSG Breaks Goal Record, United Lose on Matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League

PSG, Chelsea, and Barcelona advanced to the last 16 after the conclusion of the UEFA Champions League Matchday 5 on the 22nd of November.

Basel 0 – 1 Manchester United 

Jose Mourinho put a brave face on Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Basel in their Champions League tie on Wednesday night, focusing on his side’s profligacy rather than the defeat.

United were utterly dominant in the first period, hitting the woodwork twice, while Marouane Fellaini had a header cleared off the line and Romelu Lukaku missed a one-on-one chance.

The hosts, buoyed by their survival, improved after the break, grabbing a winner in the 89th minute through Michael Lang.

Still, Mourinho preferred to reflect on what could have been.

“Frustration starts in the first half, I was counting to my assistants: one two and three, then four and five, then Martial six, Fellaini seven, we go to half time 0-0 and put ourselves in this situation and in the second half it would be difficult to have the same number of chances.”

Paris SG 7 – 1 Celtic

Celtic took a first-minute lead against PSG at the Parc de Princes in their Champions League Group B match on Wednesday night, but that was as good as it got for the Scottish champions as they were ruthlessly swept aside.

The Parisian side hit back almost immediately, with two goals from Neymar and Edinson Cavani, plus one each for Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verratti and Dani Alves as PSG ran out 7-1 winners to record their biggest ever win in the competition.

Moussa Dembele had opened the scoring with Celtic’s first attack, before Neymar hit back with a quick-fire double as PSG embarrassed Brendan Rogers’ side.

PSG won the first encounter between the sides 5-0 and have five wins from five with a goal difference of 23.

Despite the hammering, Celtic are still in with a chance of qualifying for the Europa League as the Hoops remain third in Champions League Group, B three points above bottom-placed Anderlecht, who lost 2-1 to Bayern Munich with just one game remaining.

Bayern 2 – 1 Anderlecht

It was the hosts who came out of the blocks quickly and missed some good chances in the first half through Adrien Trebel and Lukasz Teodorczyk, as Bayern struggled initially.

After the break, Robert Lewandowski got the opening goal largely against the run of play before Sofiane Hanni equalised. Nonetheless, a below-par Bayern got the victory with Corentin Tolisso heading home.

Juventus 0 – 0 Barcelona

Both teams had openings to score though it was Ivan Rakitic who went closest for Barca as his free-kick hit the woodwork with Gigi Buffon beaten. Paulo Dybala then had a good chance for the hosts but he fired inches over the bar.

After the break, Luis Suarez and second-half substitute Lionel Messi came close to getting the opener. Lucas Digne wasted a good opening not long after before marc-Andre ter Stegen saved the visitors in injury time with a superb save from Dybala.

Qarabag 0 – 4 Chelsea

Antonio Conte’s side never looked back after Rashad Sadiqov received a straight red card for hauling down Willian inside the box on 20 minutes, with Hazard’s penalty paving the way for a commanding win.

Willian bagged a brace himself and Cesc Fabregas also got on the scoresheet to take the Blues through to the knockout stages.
