Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker has revealed that the DStv Premiership decided against signing the son of Dutch legend Ruud Gullit.
Maxim Gullit (22) is currently a free agent after parting ways with Eerste Divisie side SC Cambuur Leeuwarden.
Gullit came up through the ranks at Netherlands side AZ Alkmaar and joined Cambuur in 2021 but only went on to make nine first-team appearances.
He has been on trial at the Cape Winelands club but didn’t do enough to convince Barker to offer him a contract – with their foreign quota already full.
Barker explained on iDiski Times: “I think he is a quality footballer, we enjoyed having him. Obviously, the pedigree that he has and he really is a good technical footballer.
“It was a matter of having our foreign quota for this season full, in the centre-back position we already have five this season, come the end of the season we will see what transpires in the market.
“There’s a possibility that we could then invite him in our pre-season, it’s not over it will depend on one or two actions that may or may not take place.”
