According to a KickOff.com source, Maritzburg have joined Chippa United in the race to sign the 35-year-old Mabena, who was recently released by Royal AM.

“Maritzburg United have made contact,” a source close to the player told to KickOff.com.

“John Maduka is a big fan of Mabena after working with him at both Royal AM and Bloemfontein Celtic.

“Chippa United are very interested. They have already made an official offer. The player is still assessing the situation and is considering all options before making a final decision.”

Machine Motloung, who is Mabena’s representative, has confirmed that the striker is now a free agent after being released by Royal AM.

“We are still going to meet with Mabena and discuss his next destination,” Motloung told KickOff.com.

“It’s still too early to discuss any concrete offers as we just received his clearance yesterday.”

Mabena’s unexpected move from Royal AM is likely to have stemmed from taking them to the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) after not receiving his salary for July.

The PSL DRC then ruled in Mabena’s favour, and ordered Royal AM to pay the veteran striker but that reportedly didn’t happen.

The player then took the club to the Labour Court over unpaid salaries for July and August but the outcome of the case is yet to be made public.
