Serena Williams crashed out of the Australian open after a bizarre turn of events denied her a shot at her 24th Grand Slam.

Serena Williams’ quest to claim 24th Grand Slam title continued when she faced Karolina Pliskova in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

Williams lost the match 4-6, 6-4, 5-7.

The American seemed to suffer an ankle injury when she was serving for her first match point at 5-1, 40-30. That seemed to be the turning point for the match although the athlete downplayed her injury:

“I don’t think it had anything to do with my ankle, per se. I just think she was just nailing and hitting shots” Serena told FoxSports

Another turning point was the umpires call for the foot fault on her first match point as he ace was called out.

The loss means the rematch against Naomi Osaka will not take place and Osaka will face Pliskova in the last four on Thursday the 24th of January.
