Gulfstream Park Best Bets Sunday

Race 2 (Maiden Claiming)
No7 W W CANDY
Trainer: Scott Becker – Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr
Easy to back on his second career start over course and
distance last month, W W CANDY kept on to earn minor money and will be wiser
for that experience. The son of Twirling Candy finds himself in the weakest of
the three maiden claimers on the card and with a top jockey booked can
capitalise. In order to achieve that he needs to overcome Three Deep, who was
rolled when odds-on two starts back and is becoming expensive. Apache is a colt
with an identical profile to the top selection, and with Saez on top could
cause him most problems.

Prediction: 7-1-3

Race 6 (Maiden Special Weight)
No2 CAROLYN’S SMILE
Trainer: Ralph Nicks – Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione
Yet to disappoint but still seeking a breakthrough success,
CAROLYN’S SMILE looks like being a tough nut to crack. On third start this year
she continues the trend of having a month between races, and is pound for pound
a more reliable prospect than main market rival Sweden. Her first run in maiden
claiming saw her beat all but Bird Map, who is a good yardstick to go by.
Sweden has started between 12-1 and 25-1 for three of her last four starts, but
with Edgard Zayas aboard for the first time she’ll get every assistance from
the saddle. That said, it could be left to Raspberry Ballet to fill the exacta,
as she’s hit the board in all but one of her nine outings, making her a most
reliable option.

Prediction: 2-6-3

Race 7 (Allowance Optional Claiming)
No7 GOOD BYE GREG
Trainer: Larry Rivelli – Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr

It must be short odds against one of the veterans winning
this interesting contest, and while Trev returns after skipping an opportunity
the other day the claims of GOOD BYE GREG look stronger. The winner of three
allowance optionals at Arlington and an allowance at Philadelphia, the
Teuflesberg entire endured training issues and now returns off a 217-day break.
His workouts have been good and with Ortiz another positive he can see off the
ten-year-old Trev who is never more dangerous than when coming back from a
lay-off, as is the case today. For value purposes the other to include is
Shared Legacy, who has looked on the case on his last two starts on the sprint
track here and should have gained a confidence boost from his win exactly a
month ago.

Prediction: 7-10-6

Race 9 (Allowance Optional Claiming)
No2 FROSTED GRACE
Trainer: Katherine Ritvo – Jockey: Nik Juarez
FROSTED GRACE is proving a credit to his connections, and
since taking out an allowance last fall has put in four earning runs in as many
outings at a slightly higher level. It means he should enjoy the more
straightforward assignment that awaits him, with just five opponents to
overcome. The best of them could be Where Paradise Lay who debuts for trainer
Brendan Walsh off the claim. He got the job done well enough here but on a
sloppy track, and while he’s clearly in the zone, may find the classy Frosted
Grace too hot to handle. With an eye catching jockey change, WHYRUAWESOME can
make it a fifth consecutive place finish since joining his trainer, but I don’t
expect him to win.

Prediction: 2-6-4
