IRB Under 20 Championship: South Africa v Argentina Preview

IRB Under 20 Championship: Round 1 Preview

The Junior Boks will be looking to claim third spot at the 2019 Under 20 Championship when they take on tournament hosts Argentina on Saturday the 22nd of June.

Chean Roux’ boys will be looking to put their disappointing semi-finals performance behind them when they close out their tournament with a clash against the Argentine’s. While it is only a 3rd/4th place play-off, both teams will be desperate to get the win as they will go into the next year’s tournament as third seeds.

South Africa
The Junior Boks saw their title tilt come to a disappointing end this past Monday as they were beaten 7-20 by an extremely clinical French outfit. The South Africans were unable to capitalize on a heap of chances with knock-ons and poor decision making costing them the semi-final.

This is a solid South African side, however, and I’m fully expecting them to iron out their errors come this Saturday. They will need to add a bit of variety to their game though, as their ball-carrying forwards are marked men with the French illustrating how to defend the South African heavies.

Argentina
Like the South Africans, Argentina also had a tough semi-final encounter that saw them go down 13-34 to Australia. They also struggled to take their chances when deep in their opponents 22 allowing the Australians to turn over the ball on a number of occasions.

The Argentine’s will need to be far more clinical this Saturday if they are to end their home tournament on a high note. They will also need to be wary of kicking the ball away as the South Africans have a magnificent back three her are awesome on the counter-attack.

Verdict: South Africa (-6.5) 17/20 *Forecast Handicap
If the rain stays away this Saturday we could be in for a high-scoring thriller with both teams possessing some magnificent counter-attacking players. My money is on the South Africans winning this one by more than seven points, and the total scoreline going past the 62 point mark.
