Goodwood – Day 3
Qatar Nassau Stakes (Group 1)
The best race confined to fillies and mares run this season, this brings together a host of classy horses with this year’s three-year-old crop very strongly represented with dual Classic winner HERMOSA heading the line up. Aidan O’Brien’s charge landed the Qipco 1,000 Guineas and the Irish equivalent in authoritative fashion, before running into a revived Watch Me in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. She’s joined in a twin-pronged Coolmore challenge by JUST WONDERFUL, who last month finished a courageous runner-up to Concrete Rose at Belmont Park after meeting with serious interference mid race.
The Investec Oaks form is also on display with the seventh and eighth at Epsom, MEHDAAYIH and MAQSAD, clashing over this quarter mile shorter distance. Mehdaayih went on to readily land a Saint-Cloud Group 2 over a mile and a half while Maqsad has been kept on hold after travelling best in the Classic before the petrol gauge flashed red in the final two furlongs.
CHANNEL is a fascinating contender from France in respect of her narrow defeat of Commes in the Prix de Diane. That Chantilly Group 1 was a third win on the bounce for the Francois-Henri Graffard trained raider.
The highest older filly in betting lists is RAWDAA who is the epitome of consistency and looking to better a couple of near misses, the latest a neck defeat by Move Swiftly in an Ascot Group 2. In fairness this was devalued by the winner when she ran unplaced at Deauville on Sunday.
Her stablemate SUN MAIDEN is very closely matched with NYALETI on Newcastle form from June. Sun Maiden had the call by half a length in that Tapeta contest but while Sun Maiden has been freshened up, NYALETI went on to run a shade disappointingly in the Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock.
The nine-strong field is completed by global traveller DEIRDRE for whom Oisin Murphy is an eyecatching jockey booking. The Japanese contender has trained enthusiastically in Newmarket since being beaten more than 13 lengths by Crystal Ocean at Royal Ascot.
Race 2 – No 12 THREAT
Trainer: Richard Hannon
Jockey: Tom Marquand
Considered the best juvenile colt in the Hannon academy, THREAT can take this Group 2 Richmond Stakes and put himself firmly in next season’s 2,000 Guineas picture. Hugely impressive on his debut, he did everything right in the Coventry Stakes only to fall to the late surge of Arizona who beat him half a length. Hannon has always had this race in mind for Threat who worked splendidly in his winding up gallop at Herridge.

Race 3 – No 4 DAL HORRISGLE
Trainer: William Haggas
Jockey: Danny Tudhope
How good is DAL HORRISGLE ? It’s a burning question that will be answered as the rapidly improving colt tackles the Group 3 Gordon Stakes which is traditionally a trial for the St Leger. He extended his winning sequence to three when hacking up at Haydock and although that was in a Class 3 handicap he is a difficult entity to estimate, and could be very good.

(Each Way) Race 5 No7 INDIAN CREAK
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: David Probert
The hottest nursery of the season so far sees INDIAN CREAK with a good chance to consolidate after impressively breaking his maiden at Epsom. He’s subsequently worked with great gusto accompanied by an older horse and with four places of offer is a solid Each Way betting proposition.

Race 6 – No 8 INCOGNITO
Trainer: Mick Channon
Jockey: Andrea Atzeni
Only five of the 16 carded runners have previous experience of the track and the best of these might be INCOGNITO who is getting better with each outing and was unfortunate to meet traffic problems at a crucial stage of her Newmarket race last month. Trapped behind horses, she stayed on strongly up the final hill, and though no match for wide margin scorer Ananya would have finished a lot closer with a clear passage.
