International Racing: Friday 08 May 2020 – Port Augusta

International Racing: Friday 08 May 2020 – Cranbourne

A small eight-race programme is scheduled for Port Augusta on Friday. There are a few short-priced favourites on the day and they all look hard to oppose. The best bet comes in Race 2 in the form of PHANTOM DATE who has produced three good runs since returning from a 51-week break. He does not meet the strongest field this afternoon and should take a power of beating.

Best Bet: PHANTOM DATE (Race 2)

Race 1
VEGAN is a filly taking on the males. She produced
a promising debut when finishing third over 1100m at Penola, three weeks ago.
She should have finished closer to the winner that day as she was crowded at
the 600m mark. It must be noted that the form of that race has been franked.
The daughter of Purrealist would have come on with the experience under her
belt and with the natural improvement that is expected, she should be the one
they all have to beat. PERUVIAN
EXPRESS
is still a maiden after
eleven runs, but he was touched off in his last start over 1100m at Bordertown.
Apprentice jockey Dylan Caboche who was aboard him last time, retains the ride
and if repeating that run, he should pose a threat to the top selection.
Race 2
PHANTOM DATE has produced three good runs since being given
a 51-week break. He runs well over today’s distance with a record of three wins
and a third-place finish from eight outings. Justin Potter knows the son of
Esperero well as he has won three times and finished third twice from nine
starts. The combination does not take on the strongest opposition today and
should find themselves in the winner’s enclosure. NO PAROLE was in need of
his last start over 1100m at Gawler. He loves racing on this course having won
twice and finishing second once from four outings. Eran Boyd gets along well
with the son of Star Witness and they should be right there in the run down to
the finishing post.
Race 3
OLIVE GROVE’S last two starts after returning from a
14-week break have been good. He stayed on well to finish third in his last
start over this distance at Gawler. The son of Denman is having his peak run
this afternoon and should be cherry-ripe. Sairyn Fawke who finished second
aboard him in his penultimate start, steps back into the saddle today and the
combination should be the ones to beat. MISSED ME produced some
fair form before being given a lengthy 51-week break. She has her first run for
her new trainer and if settled into her new surroundings well, the daughter of
Good Journey may be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top
selection.
Race 4
WHEN STARS ALIGN produced some good form before being given a
well-deserved 35-week break. He loves racing on this course having won once and
finished second twice from three starts. The drop in trip should not pose an
issue to the son of Zoustar and he may be the one they all have to beat, if fit
and well. BOTTLE AND BIRD has not finished too far off the winner in
recent outings. She gets along well with apprentice Sophie Logan who has ridden
her six times for a win, two seconds and a third-place finish. The daughter of
Pluck is having her first run for her new conditioner and if settled into her
new surroundings, she should be right there in the run down to the finishing
post.
Race 5
ANTRIM’S SECRET has not finished too far off the winner in
her last four starts. She was heavily backed in her last start at Bordertown
when finishing third, half a length behind the winner. She has finished second
once and third twice from four attempts over this distance. The daughter of
Akeed Moofeed makes her course debut this afternoon and if suited to the track,
should be tough to beat. It is encouraging that jockey Justin Potter has taken
the ride. SOUR CREAM finished 5.1 lengths behind the top selection
in her last start. She is much better than that outing and if repeating her run
on 29 March when winning over six furlongs at Bordertown, she should be right
there in the run down to the finishing post.
Race 6
FULTON STREET ran a good race when finishing third over
1500m at Gawler in his last start. He moved up like a winner that day, but was
outgunned in the final 75m. It must be noted that the form of that race has
been franked. The son of Street Cry is unbeaten in two starts over this course
and distance and will be looking to keep that record intact today. SPIEGEL GROVE was in need of his last outing when returning from a 16-week break. He
runs well on this track having won three times, finishing second once and third
once from eight outings. Should the top selection fluff his lines, he may be
the one to pick up the pieces.
Race 7
This is an open
contest and caution is advised. The narrow first selection is JAAMINT who has shown good signs of returning to best form in her last two starts
over six furlongs. She turned for home four wide in her last start and ran on
strongly at the business end. The daughter of Mint Lane makes her course debut
this afternoon and if suited to the track, she should be the one they all have
to beat today. ARCTIC BLAZE’S last three starts have been fair. The
daughter of Face Value placed in her only attempt on this course and on best
form shown, she should be the one to throw out the biggest challenge to the top
selection.
Race 8
MISS ELEGANCE is the value bet on today’s card. She is much
better than her last start at Gawler suggests. She ran a very good race in her
penultimate start when finishing second over nine furlongs at Clare. 3kg
claiming apprentice Margaret Collett knows her well and if putting her best
foot forward, she should find herself in the winner’s enclosure. TEXAS MILLER’S last start when finishing third over 1500m at Gawler was good. He is
unbeaten in his only start on this course. The blinkers get re-fitted this
afternoon and if these have the desired effect, he should give the top selection
a good run for her money in the fight to the finishing post.
